Can You Hear Me?

There are voices in dark rooms
that cry out for understanding,
faces forgotten and frayed
by the sharp edges of broken mirrors.

Not noticed as they follow after,
weighted down by the dreams and promises
you've cast aside —
defined by shadows,
heard in that aching last note
of your favorite song.

They loved you once,
these velveteen rabbit-ghosts
who only wanted to be real.

Now, they're left to dusty corners,
and heat-shimmers
over misplaced highways —
fleeting glimpses,
quick to be gone
and quicker forgotten.

There are voices in dark rooms
that only want to be heard,
faces in mirrors
waiting to be seen.

isn't it?

The ones that sneak in,
leave tiny x-marks-the-spot tattoos —
this is where
he made me laugh,
cry,
love him.

Afterwards, a simple shape
in just the right cloud
can make songs fly into your head,
and fingers tremble
across worn-smooth steering wheels
on horizon-bound roads.
